Wolves Among Sheep – Recognizing Deception and Walking in Godly Discernment

 Beloved, have you ever looked someone in the eyes and felt a chill? A subtle warning, a whisper in your spirit that says, something is not right? You feel it, don’t you? And yet… you brush it off. You smile. You laugh. You tell yourself, they are my friend. But today, the Word of God says to us: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15).

Yes! The world is full of wolves hidden in the guise of friends. And they do not reveal themselves all at once. No! They hide their teeth until the moment they strike. They mirror your thoughts, echo your laughter, appear loyal, but their loyalty is a mask. Their kindness is a performance. The Scripture reminds us: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

Oh, church! A true friend stands beside you when life is simple, yes! But also when life is cruel! A true friend walks with you in suffering. But a wolf? A wolf waits for weakness. They watch. They calculate. They study every word, every movement, every smile. And their subtlety… oh, their subtlety is what makes them so dangerous.

They do not strike with malice immediately. No! They plant seeds of doubt. Tiny frustrations, disguised as jokes. Suggestions that sound helpful but are only for themselves. And the Scripture warns us: “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44). Wolves among sheep are agents of that same deception.

Listen! You may be saying, Pastor, I have trusted. I have loved. I have given my heart. But the enemy… he is cunning. He will use the very people you trust to steal, to wound, to drain. And Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” This is spiritual warfare. Every subtle word, every half-smile, every “innocent” suggestion—it is a battlefield!

Now, how do we guard ourselves? How do we discern? “The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going” (Proverbs 14:15). Watch actions, not words. Notice patterns. Notice inconsistencies. Notice the joy someone takes in your discomfort. A smile too long, a compliment too sharp, a word that lingers in your heart longer than it should. These are signals, church! These are warnings from the Spirit!

You see, the heart wants to believe. The soul whispers, it can’t be them. But the truth is in the evidence, in discernment, in prayer. Recognizing the wolf is not paranoia—it is wisdom! “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). Observe, measure, pray, discern!

Let me tell you something. Wolves manipulate more than actions—they manipulate thoughts. They twist words. They shape perception. A comment that seems innocent becomes a seed of doubt: “Are you sure you should do that?” Or, “I didn’t expect you to handle it this way, my friend”. These are tools of control. Subtle, patient, strategic. And we must be aware because Jesus Himself said, “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16). Observe the fruit of their behavior. Discern the patterns.

Now I want you to hear me clearly. Wolves do not only act on one front—they attack every area they can exploit: your trust, your energy, your joy, your peace. And the Scripture tells us: “He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live” (Proverbs 15:27). The wolf grows strong as you weaken. They smile while your strength diminishes. They celebrate while your energy is drained.

And some of you, I know, you have been there. You have been betrayed by a friend. You have been taken advantage of. You have been manipulated emotionally, spiritually, psychologically. You feel exhausted. You feel drained. You feel confused. But let me remind you today—God has not left you helpless. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

Yes! Observe, measure, pray. Step back when needed. Protect your spirit. Guard your heart. The wolves will try to exhaust you, but the Lord gives wisdom to those who wait upon Him. “The prudent sees the evil, and hides himself” (Proverbs 22:3). Sometimes the most powerful act is to withdraw, to stand in discernment, to refuse the exhaustion. Let the wolf reveal itself by its own actions.

And there is a more dangerous danger—the silent wolf. The one who works behind the scenes. The one who spreads rumors, whispers lies, twists perceptions. Oh, it is silent, but it is deadly. Your reputation can be tarnished before you even realize it. Your confidence chipped away. Your joy undermined. And yet the wolf smiles beside you, pretending loyalty, while plotting quietly in the shadows.

But church, the Lord gives us power. “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Do not fear the cunning of men or wolves. Stand firm. Walk in discernment. Protect your mind, your heart, your spirit. Do not be deceived. “Be ye wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Watch, measure, pray, but do not mirror the wolf. Walk in righteousness.

And now, hear me on the final layer: emotional exploitation. These predators feed on your very emotions. Every tear you comfort, every worry you absorb, every doubt you soothe—they build power over you. They grow strong while you weaken. They smile while your joy diminishes. But Scripture says: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Lord strengthens the weary! The Lord restores the heart that is betrayed!

Do not despair! For there is hope, and that hope is Jesus Christ. He bore betrayal. He bore manipulation. He bore the sins of the deceived. And He offers restoration, renewal, and life everlasting. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Today, He invites you into His protection, His discernment, His salvation.

You may have been drained, exploited, deceived. But God offers a new beginning. Lay down your burdens. Confess. Repent. Believe. Trust. Receive the free gift of salvation. The wolf has no power over you when Christ reigns in your heart.

And listen! The enemy will howl. The deceiver will plot. But the Lord is your refuge. “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn” (Isaiah 54:17). You are untouchable in Christ! You are covered! You are free!

Stand today, church! Stand firm! And declare: I will not be deceived. I will not be drained. I will not be manipulated. I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. I put on the whole armor of God. I am watchful. I am discerning. I am victorious through Christ who strengthens me (Ephesians 6:10-18).

If you have never accepted Him, today is your moment. Today is the day of salvation! Today is the day of deliverance! “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6). Confess. Repent. Believe. Receive. Walk in victory. Walk in discernment. Walk in the power of Christ!

Remember this: once you are in Him, once you abide in Christ, you are untouchable. The wolves will howl, the deceivers will plot, but you are protected by the Almighty. Guard your heart. Guard your mind. Guard your spirit. Stand firm in the Lord. And walk in righteousness, discernment, and truth. Amen!
